The position description is part of the evidence
FERS disability retirement concerns useful and efficient service in your position. Your official position description helps explain the duties against which limitations are evaluated. Read it together with performance standards, attendance requirements, and the supervisor's statement rather than assuming one document tells the entire story.
Give it to your treating provider
OPM's SF 3112 instructions ask applicants to give a position description to the doctor. Explain the work demands factually: sustained concentration, lifting, standing, travel, public contact, or other relevant tasks. The provider decides what restrictions are supported medically and how long they are expected to continue.
If it does not match your actual work
Ask HR or your supervisor to clarify discrepancies. Keep the official document and explain differences accurately in your own statement, supported by assignments, performance standards, or other relevant records. Do not alter the official description or delay filing until an update is complete if a deadline is approaching.
Use the correct agency documents
SF 3112B is the Supervisor's Statement and requests the position description and current performance standards. SF 3112D is the Agency Certification of Reassignment and Accommodation Efforts. The applicant's SF 3112A, medical evidence, and agency documents should be checked for factual consistency.
Performance is not the only consideration
Useful and efficient service includes performance of critical or essential elements and satisfactory conduct and attendance. The regulation also addresses a condition incompatible with service or retention even when no deficiency is recorded. An appraisal alone does not resolve eligibility, and a diagnosis alone does not explain duty limitations.
Reassignment is a separate inquiry
Qualifying vacancies involve the same agency, grade or pay level and tenure, the same commuting area, and work for which the employee is qualified. The position description helps identify the starting role; it does not replace the agency's certification or OPM's eligibility decision.
There is no verified basis here to call generic physician statements the “number one” cause of denials. That assertion has been removed. Focus on complete and accurate evidence, not a promised outcome.
