Winning Your Case Was Only Half the Battle
You fought for months — maybe years — to get your federal disability retirement approved. Your attorney celebrated the win. But then they moved on. And now you're left with a lifetime of compliance obligations that no one explained to you. One mistake can cost you everything.
The 80% Income Rule
If your earned income exceeds 80% of the current salary for your former federal position, OPM can terminate your annuity. This limit changes every year with federal pay scale adjustments — and most retirees have no idea what their exact number is.
OPM Medical Reviews
OPM can request a periodic medical review at any time to determine if you've "recovered" from your disability. Without proper documentation from your treating physician, a single poorly worded medical update can trigger a finding of medical recovery — and the loss of your annuity.
Wrong Job, Wrong Risk
Taking a private-sector job that's too similar to your former federal role can signal to OPM that you've recovered. Even if you're under the income limit, the wrong job title or duties can put your entire benefit at risk.
Federal disability annuitants under age 60 are currently subject to OPM's annual income reporting and periodic medical reviews. Most have no professional guidance on how to stay compliant.
Three Ways to Protect Your Annuity
Whether you need a quick answer, a comprehensive plan, or ongoing protection, every service is designed to safeguard the benefit you worked so hard to earn.

Emily Hall is the founder of The Federal Disability Review, LLC and a recognized expert in federal disability transition and compliance. With a diverse background spanning military service, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and established federal disability law practices, Emily has dedicated her career to understanding the intricacies of the federal employment system.
Her military service instilled discipline and a deep understanding of government bureaucracy. Her subsequent FAA experience provided critical insights into federal employment structures, physical requirements, and the interactive reasonable accommodation process. Her tenure at leading law firms gave her a front-row seat to the entire disability application lifecycle — and highlighted the devastating gap in post-approval support that leaves successful applicants vulnerable.
Emily holds a Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies and possesses two critical industry designations: the Federal Retirement Consultant (FRC) designation from the Federation of Federal Employee Benefit Advocates, and the Associate Disability Management Specialist (ADMS) certificate from the Commission for Case Manager Certification. She is currently pursuing her master's degree to become a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), which will allow her to expand services to include clinical Functional Capacity Evaluations.

What Most People Don't Realize After Approval
"Most federal disability retirees are never clearly told how the 80% income rule actually works. Many don't realize they can lose their annuity simply by taking the wrong job or earning too much in a given year."
Former Federal Employee Experience
"OPM medical reviews often catch people off guard. Without consistent documentation from your physician, even years after approval, your benefits can be questioned or terminated."
Common Post-Approval Risk
"After approval, most attorneys step away — and clients are left trying to figure out income limits, job choices, and compliance rules on their own."
Post-Approval Reality
This is exactly where The Federal Disability Review comes in.
The Federal Disability Review helps federal disability retirees understand the rules, avoid costly mistakes, and build a plan that protects their benefits long-term.
